The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was established within the United Nations. UNFPA, which started its work in 1969, has continued its work uninterruptedly since 67. Since 1971, it has established partnerships with the governments of Turkey and combined the scope of its work with this geography.
UNFPA's main concerns are sexual health and reproduction. Ensuring safe birth and reaching the potential of young people are the main motivations of the institution. UNFPA continues to work for the reproductive health of women and youth in more than 150 countries. Today, more than one million women are exposed to severe life-threatening complications during childbirth, and many women have difficulties accessing healthy contraceptive methods. UNFPA is an important international organization that aims to solve crucial problems that profoundly affect the lives of women and children, such as loss of life due to young pregnancy, child marriage, female genital mutilation, and gender-based violence, and works in this direction.
One of the fundamental rights UNFPA advocates is the extension of all reproductive rights. It struggles to make access to this right healthy and safe with many issues such as family and population planning, maternal health, and sexual health education. Today, sexual and reproductive health is ignored mainly due to extreme poverty and causes vital problems for many women. The fact that the death rate during pregnancy and childbirth has decreased by half since the establishment of UNFPA in 1967 is promising for the future.
After working in Turkey for more than 40 years, UNFPA establishes and continues to work with many different actors such as government institutions, civil society, the private sector, and universities. The main study subjects of the plan, which is now called the 7th Country Plan and covers the years 2021-2025; sexual and reproductive health, unmet need for family planning, use of modern contraceptives, maternal mortality, gender equality and women's empowerment, gender-based violence against women and girls, child, early and forced marriages, and population dynamics.
Although UNFPA continues to work on achieving fundamental human rights and empowering women by making women's lives safer, we still have a long way to go in this regard. At this point, it is in our hands to make life safer and healthier for women through cooperation with UNFPA.
