UNEP supports the consistent application of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. It is also the leading ecological authority globally, serving as a competent advocate for the environment. In Nairobi, UNEP was established in 1972 at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. It is the only United Nations agency focused solely on the environment. It coordinates the environmental activities of the United Nations. It produces reports on the state of the environment worldwide. In addition, it develops political and legal instruments for international environmental protection and provides consultancy services to relevant countries. Due to its increasing responsibility, it is divided into seven units. UNEP plays a crucial role in multilateral environmental conventions. It is in many contracts.
What is the Purpose of UNEP?
UNEP seeks to bring change for people and nature by examining the causes of crises, including climate change, wildlife, biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste. UNEP supports member states in the development and investment planning of environmental sustainability. It provides countries with the tools and technologies necessary to protect and restore the environment. UNEP aims to inspire governments and societies to increase the welfare of future generations. It also promotes environmental leadership and partnership to improve people's quality of life.
UNEP prefers results-based management. In this direction, it has been organized according to six strategic areas. It integrates countries into the struggle by providing leadership on issues such as adaptation to climate change, mitigation, technology, and finance. It facilitates the transition to low-carbon societies. It raises awareness for understanding climate science and accepting the transition to renewable energy.
UNEP conducts environmental assessments on countries affected by crises. It guides compliance with the legal and institutional framework in ecological management. It promotes many services to facilitate the management and restoration of markets by the SDGs. UNEP establishes the necessary processes, institutions, laws, policies, and programs to ensure sustainable development at the country, regional and global levels. Governments are supported to mainstream the environment in implementation, empowerment, and development planning.
UNEP strives to minimize the impact of harmful substances and hazardous wastes on the environment and people. For example, UNEP has started negotiations for a global agreement on mercury. It has begun to carry out special projects on mercury and SAICM to reduce the risks to human health and the environment. UNEP focuses on regional and global efforts to ensure that natural resources are produced, processed, and consumed in a more environmentally friendly way.
