What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the environment, and ensure that all people live in peace and prosperity. This call to action includes 17 goals that the United Nations' member states aim to achieve by the end of 2030. It builds on the Millennium Development Goals' achievements. It went into effect in January 2016. Climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace, and justice are among the new areas covered. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) provides countries with clear direction and purpose. With the title of "Gender Equality", it is stated that the aim is to ensure gender equality and to empower all women and girls. By empowering women and girls, economic growth and welfare will be increased. It is aimed to eliminate discrimination against women and girls everywhere. Sexual violence and abuse, unequal distribution of unpaid care and housework, and discrimination in public office are significant obstacles. Today, research shows that the number of women in public service is higher than any period. But the number of female leaders is not the same. It will be possible to end gender equality and reduce its effect by encouraging women leaders. As the United Nations, with the 2030 goals, policies will be produced to further the existence of women in society, and their contributions will be increased by strengthening the legislation.

Nine primary targets were specified as part of the "Gender Equality" agenda. These are:

1. End all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere

2. Elimination of all forms of violence against all women and girls, including trafficking, sexual and all forms of exploitation, in public and private spheres

3. Elimination of all harmful practices such as child marriage, early forced marriage, and female genital mutilation

4. Recognition and appreciation of unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of utilities, infrastructure, and social protection policies and the promotion of nationally appropriate sharing of responsibility within the household and family

5. Ensuring women's full and effective participation in the decision-making processes of political, economic, and social life and equal opportunities for women to be leaders in decision-making at all levels

6. Ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health rights in line with the conference outcomes of the 6th International Conference on Population and Development Program of Action, Beijing Platform for Action, and their review conferences.

7. Reforms to ensure that women have equal rights to access economic resources, own and control land and other types of property, financial services, inheritance, and natural resources, according to national laws.

8. Developing the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communication technologies, to advance women's empowerment

9. Adopt and strengthen sound policies and legally enforceable legislation to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls at all levels
