WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?

Updated: Jan 10, 2023

With sustainability, the continuity of production and diversity is ensured, while it is ensured that humanity lives in prosperity permanently. Meeting society's needs without compromising future generations' needs is actually the definition of sustainability.

The system in which the ecological balance is preserved without reducing the quality of life is considered the ideal order for the modern world. Sustainability will be ensured through processes and behaviors that prevent the consumption of natural resources.

In order to achieve sustainability, many elements must come together. Sustainability should be ensured economically, socially, and environmentally. If sustainability is not achieved, no real success will be achieved. Sustainability can only be achieved by considering three pillars profitability, humanity, and the planet.

What is Sustainable Development?

There is no single agreed definition of sustainability yet. The most preferred definition was declared by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development.

According to the definition made by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development, sustainable development is a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

What is the Difference Between Sustainability and Sustainable Development?

They are constantly confused with each other as two similar concepts. Sustainable development is used to emphasize a long-term perspective compared to sustainability. The concept of sustainable development was first defined in the Brundtland Report published in 1987. This report is also known as "Our Common Future" because it provides data on the expected future of the world.

Adding the expression development to sustainability is not only permanent development. Social progress is expected. An improvement in the social and global quality of life is expected. The level of well-being is expected to increase regularly. Sustainable development of all social or economic parameters is required with the precondition of protecting and improving the environment and social equality. While sustainability expresses a behavior, sustainable development expresses a target policy and way of life. That is why they are constantly mixed and used interchangeably.
