What is Leed Certificate?

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

It was enacted in 1998 by the US Green Building Council. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certificate is the largest, most comprehensive, and most preferred among other green building certificates and programs. LEED does not focus on whether a building is only a renewable energy system, wastes water, or is harmful to health. LEED strives to create the best possible facility.

Sustainably designed buildings reduce the use of natural resources. Sustainable buildings aim to minimize the amount of waste, harmful environmental effects, and greenhouse gas emissions. With the LEED certificate, targets such as maximizing the efficiency of a building have been set. It is a certificate system prepared by looking at the big picture, where all crucial elements are brought together. In short, it has been prepared with a holistic perspective. The certification period covers the design and construction of the building and, finally, its operation.

What Can Be Done to Get LEED Certification?

As a certificate, they have set specific goals to build better buildings. The first target that has been determined is to reduce the pollution factors that will cause global climate change. In particular, it is desired to create structures where carbon emissions can be reduced, and water efficiency can be achieved. Another determining element is the creation of architectural designs that will improve human health. Many goals have been set, such as improving the ventilation inside the buildings and adding green areas. Another expected goal is to build architectural structures that protect water resources and even restore water resources. Another goal is to create forms that do not harm or enhance biodiversity and ecosystems. It is desired to create a structure in which sustainable and regenerative materials are used directly with this goal. In this way, maximum benefit will be obtained with minimum materials in the buildings constructed. Finally, it is desired to create structures that increase the quality of life of society.

How Does the Certification Process Work?

How much of the determined targets are achieved, a certificate is given at an appropriate level. Four different groups have been determined per the targets. At the lowest level, only certificates are given. The next level is determined as silver. It is a system that continues gradually at gold and platinum levels.
