Art and sustainability

Updated: Apr 9

Sanat ve Sürdürülebilirlik

Art and sustainability are intertwined concepts today, and the role of art in enlightening society and raising awareness is critical for spreading the understanding of sustainability. Artists use the theme of sustainability in their works; thus, informing the public ensures that steps are taken towards a sustainable society. In this context, it is a very realistic goal for art to progress in sustainability by increasing social awareness.

When examples from around the world are examined, Green House Theater in London stands out as the first zero-waste theater in England. Here, costumes and props are purchased second-hand and made available to other communities when not in use. The theater building is built from recyclable materials, and its roof is designed to allow sunlight to pass through. In this way, energy consumption is minimized, and work is carried out with sustainable approaches.

Another example is EcoKid Kindergarten in Vietnam. Encouraging curiosity and experimentation, this kindergarten reinforces learning with experiences by offering children educational areas intertwined with nature. The building's design includes three courtyards and playgrounds where children can interact with nature.

Finally, Melbourne, Australia's first carbon-neutral office building, designed by Decibel Architecture, is featured. The building features energy-saving colored panels that maximize daylight. It also has features like systems that help treat wastewater and a roof to collect rainwater.

As a result, examples of art and sustainability are increasing, and the role of art in this field is becoming increasingly important. In comparison, awareness of sustainability increases through artists and art, and sustainability is addressed more holistically with the widespread use of practices in this field.
